Flood gates opened as water in Sukhna Lake crosses danger mark, in many areas including Baltana and Zirakpur under threat

Chandigarh: Due to 72 hours of rain in Chandigarh, the water in Sukhna Lake has crossed the danger mark. This led the UT administration to open the flood gate of Sukhna Lake at 1.30 pm last night. After the opening of the flood gate, several low lying areas of Baltana, Zirakpur and other surrounding areas have come under threat. The gate was not closed till Sunday afternoon. The flood gate will remain open for some more time due to heavy rains in Chandigarh and surrounding areas, said officials of the UT Administration.

Earlier in the year 2021 also, flood gates were opened due to increase in water. In 2019 too, water had reached the danger mark but there was no need to open the flood gates.

In 2018, flood gates were opened for 2-3 hours as the water level in Sukhna Lake reached above the danger mark, while earlier in 2008 the gates were opened due to rising water level.
