Rape accused Danushka Gunathilaka suspended from all forms of cricket by Sri Lanka Cricket

New Delhi: Sri Lanka Cricket has taken action after the allegation of rape against Sri Lankan opener Danushka Gunathilaka in Australia. The cricket board has suspended him from all formats and he will no longer be able to play any kind of cricket till the verdict in the rape case.

Sri Lanka Cricket has issued a statement in this matter. “Following the information that Danushka Gunathilaka was accused of sexually assaulting a woman in Australia and was arrested, the Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket has decided that he will not be considered eligible for selection in any form of cricket,” it said.

The statement also said that Sri Lanka Cricket will immediately take necessary steps to investigate the allegation and if the player is found guilty in this case going on in the Australian court, he will also be punished.

Sri Lankan opener Danushka Gunathilaka was arrested by Sydney police in the early hours of Sunday. Gunathilaka was arrested by Sydney police from the team hotel after a woman accused him of rape. Gunathilaka is currently in Sydney, while the rest of the Sri Lankan team has returned to Colombo.

According to New South Wales Police, “The two met after days of conversation through an online dating app. It is alleged that on the evening of November 2, 2022, Danushka sexually abused the woman. The incident took place at rose bay, the woman’s residence. After examining the crime scene, the police arrested 31-year-old Danushka from a hotel in Sussex Street, Sydney.
