Canada declares state of emergency amid protests in Capital

Ottawa: Canada’s capital declared a state of emergency on Sunday amid ongoing protest against covid restrictions.

The Canadian authorities also asked US to stop interfering in its domestic affairs.

Thousands of truckers and protesters opposing Covid-19 related restrictions and crippled Ottawa’s downtown.

The mayor, Jim Watson declared a state of emergency as the “the most serious emergency our city has ever faced.”

Terming it a serious emergency, he said that they need to cut the red tape to get these supplies available to our police officers and to our public works staff.

Declaring a state of emergency reflects the serious danger and threat to the safety and security of residents posed by the ongoing demonstrations and highlights the need for support from other jurisdictions and levels of government. It also provides greater flexibility within the municipal administration to enable the City of Ottawa to manage business continuity for essential services for its residents and enables a more flexible procurement process, which could help purchase equipment required by frontline workers and first responders.
