Banned supplements being sold in gym-health clubs; HC seeks report from Punjab govt

Chandigarh: Cases of heart attack are increasing rapidly among the youth across the country including Punjab. One of the reasons for this in Punjab has been attributed to banned medicines/supplements used for body building in gyms and health clubs. Such supplements, which are completely prohibited in the country and abroad, are sold in Punjab without a license and medical prescription.

Ludhiana resident Ravi Kumar has filed a petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court through advocate Mohinder Kumar. It said that those training to help with body build in gyms and health clubs in Punjab are given banned food supplements and some other medicines.

While they do not have a license to sell them, these deadly drugs are being given without medical consultation. These banned drugs are being sold only by gym trainers and owners.

According to the petitioner, a doctor told him that medicines/supplements given to horses were being given to youngsters training in gyms. As a result, even a slight difference in dodge becomes a threat to human life. The petitioner has asked the High Court to impose a complete ban on all of them.

Order to file status report

The High Court has ordered the Punjab government to file a status report related to banned supplements in gyms and health clubs. Apart from this, the government has also ordered to submit inspection reports of gyms and health clubs for the year 2022.

Punjab government’s stand

During the hearing of the case, the Punjab government told the court that during the investigation, it has been found that such medicines / supplements have been given to those coming to the gym, but these are not displayed for sale.
