Take necessary steps to protect journalists: UN to governments

United Nations: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged governments to take necessary steps to ensure the safety of journalists. Guterres said more than 70 journalists were killed this year and a record number of media personnel were imprisoned, while the process of jailing, violence and death threats continues unabated.

He called on governments and the international community to ensure necessary steps to provide security to journalists.

“The press is very important to steer democracy, expose mistakes, get to know the complex world, and advance the Sustainable Development Goals,” Guterres said.

But despite this, more than 70 journalists were killed this year while playing their role in the society. Most of these crimes are still unsolved. While a record number of journalists are still imprisoned in jails.
