Supreme Court rejects PIL to disqualify candidates luring voters with freebies

New Delhi: The Supreme Court refused to entertain a petition seeking action against political parties for luring voters in the assembly elections. A three-judge bench headed by the Chief Justice said the petitioner’s intentions were suspicious.

“This is a motivated petition. We feel there is a hidden agenda. Rather than raising the issue, petitioner has targeted only a few parties,” a Bench led by CJI NV Ramana told the petitioner’s advocate Barun Kumar Sinha.

The petitioner sought disqualification of all the candidates of SP and Congress in the UP assembly elections and AAP candidates in Punjab to disqualify for distributing freebies during elections.
