Punjab-origin man found guilty of killing father with champagne bottle in London

London: A British-Indian man has been found guilty of bludgeoning his father to death with a champagne bottle under the influence of alcohol.

The incident took place two years ago. On the evening of October 30, 2021, Deekan Singh Vig, 54, murdered his 86-year-old father Arjan Singh Vig at his family home in Southgate, North London.

According to the information, police found Deekan found naked surrounded by about 100 bottles of champagne, including blood-stained Veuve Clicquot and Bollinger. He reportedly told the police that “he killed his father.

The Old Bailey court was told that the father’s body was found on the floor of Deekan’s bedroom. The report said Vig admitted to the massacre but was found guilty of murder after less than a day of deliberations by the jury.

Public prosecutor Deanna Heer KC told the court that the victim was repeatedly hit on the face and head with a champagne bottle and died. Heer told the court that the post-mortem examination has confirmed this. Deekan, who had helped her father in the family business, had become addicted to drinking alcohol during the Covid lockdown.

Police recovered 100 bottles of champagne, 10 Amazon delivery boxes of whiskey bottles and an empty bottle of scotch from the crime scene.

Deekan, who came to Britain from Uganda with his family, claimed that he had Autism and was attacked by his father. He also confessed to drinking 500 ml of whiskey a few hours before the murder.

Judge Angela Rafferty on Friday suspended Deekan’s sentence until February 10 and remanded him in custody.
