Punjab government to set up ‘Tax Intelligence Wing’

Chandigarh: The Punjab government has approved the setting up of a ‘Tax Intelligence Wing’ to check tax evasion. Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, during the budget session on June 27, had announced the setting up of a ‘Tax Intelligence Wing’ to close all loopholes to check tax evasion. The Punjab government has now approved the composition of the ‘Tax Intelligence Wing’ and staff involvement etc.

The tax intelligence wing will be headed by an additional commissioner and will consist of a joint commissioner, three ETOs, six inspectors besides experts. These include cyber, legal and business experts. In addition to one central unit, two units are also to be set up, for which there will be separate staff. Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema has claimed that the government has so far earned Rs 107 crore through the data system.

He said that with the establishment of ‘Tax Intelligence Wing’, the evasion of taxes collected will not only stop but also increase the income of the government. He said it would be easier to catch fake bills. He said that it will also be easier to conduct secret operations to prevent evasion of taxes.
