Punjab ex-MLAs to now get pension for one term only

Chandigarh: Former MLAs will now get only one pension in Punjab and no more term-wise pensions for the ex-legislators in the state would be given to any leader.

Till now ex-MLAs get separate pensions for each term served, adding to the burden on the state exchequer.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann issued the new direction and also announced to reduce family pensions of ex-MLAs.

Mann said MLAs contest elections in the name of “sewa (service)” hitting at Akali Dal indirectly and said some even say “Raj nahi, sewa (Service, not rule)” but availing multiple pensions is not sewa and the AAP government will end this practice immediately.

Earlier, besides a pension of Rs 75,150 for one term, MLAs also get additional 66% of the pension amount for every subsequent term.
