Washington: Police officers working at Times Square in the US on New Year’s Eve were bounded with a sharp-edged weapon. Law enforcement sources said two NYPD officers were injured in a knife attack outside times square’s annual celebrations late Saturday evening.
The attack took place around 10 pm. About a block near Times Square between 51st and 52nd streets on Manhattan’s 8th Avenue was set up for ball drop festivities. Senior police officials said preliminary investigations revealed that a man possibly stabbed two officers with a knife on a busy road. Fortunately, both were not seriously injured.
Sources said at least one officer fired at the suspect, which hit him on the shoulder. His injuries are also life-threatening. The knife attack and shooting shocked a long line of crowds waiting to join the NYE celebrations.
An employee of a local pizza shop said panicked people ran away during the chaos. The police immediately closed the area for their investigation.
