Colombo: Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa today declared a public emergency in the country after violent protests over the deteriorating economic crisis here.

Rajapaksa issued a special gazette notification on Friday, declaring a public emergency in Sri Lanka with effect from after as hundreds of agitators gathered there and demanded his resignation for government’s failure to address worst economic crisis in the island nation.
Meanwhile, several protesters also got injured and vehicles set on fire during the protest and police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the
demonstrators.
