34-year-old pregnant Indian woman dies in Portugal, health minister resigned on moral grounds

Lisbon: Minister of Health of Portugal Dr. Marta Demido resigned from her position on moral grounds after a pregnant Indian tourist died due to lack of a hospital bed.

The resignation came a few hours after the report came out that a pregnant female tourist could not be admitted to the hospital and she died due to lack of space in the maternity ward.

A 34-year-old Indian woman reportedly suffered a heart attack while making rounds to be admitted to hospitals in Lisbon.

According to information, a 34-year-old woman was taken to a hospital in the capital Lisbon. Due to non-availability of space in the parent-child ward, she could not be admitted and was sent to another hospital.

Meanwhile, she died on the way. After this incident, the Minister of Health of Portugal resigned from his post on moral grounds.

Many such incidents have come to light due to the lack of employees and doctors in Portugal’s hospitals. Dr. Marta Demido was the Minister of Health from 2018. The government said that Dr. Demido has realized that she cannot remain in office in such a situation.
