US bomb cyclone: President Biden issues emergency declaration in New York

Washington: The US President Joe Biden has declared a state of emergency in New York state due to extreme cold, the White House gave said in a statement.

According to the statement, “Today, President Joseph R. Biden, Jr., has declared a declared New York state state of emergency and ordered federal assistance to supplement state and local response efforts due to emergency situations resulting from the blizzard that began on December 23, 2022.”

“The president’s action authorizes the Department of Homeland Security, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), to coordinate all disaster relief efforts aimed at alleviating the difficulties caused by the emergency on the local population, mitigating suffering, and providing appropriate support for necessary emergency measures,” the statement added.

Earlier, reports said a total of 50 deaths have occurred in at least 12 states such as Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Wisconsin. Buffalo city in northeastern New York state reported the highest number of deaths due to more than one meter of snow falling over the weekend.
