Chandigarh : A verbal battle continued between the Punjab chief ministers and Haryana on Tuesday over the ongoing farm protests as controversy raged over police action on cultivators three days ago in Karnal and farm groups issued an ultimatum to the state government.
In a hard-hitting response to his Haryana counterpart’s tweets questioning him on farmer welfare measures, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Tuesday ripped into ML Khattar’s claims, trashing them as a pathetic attempt by the BJP leader to cover up the sustained and persistently shameful treatment meted out to farmers by his government.
Terming Khattar’s claims and questions as nothing but a shoddy defence against the nation-wide criticism of the latest in the series of violent assaults on peacefully protesting farmers by his government, Captain Amarinder said the various statements made by the Haryana chief minister in the wake of the brutal lathi-charge on his own state’s farmers had once again utterly and unequivocally exposed the BJP’s anti-farmer mindset.
Instead of apologizing for the unprovoked and unjustified attack on the farmers, Khattar had been brazenly defending the police action and even tried to vindicate the Karnal SDM’s shocking instructions to the cops, which the world had seen and condemned, said the Chief Minister.
Rebutting the atrocious assertions of the Haryana CM that his government had done more for the farmers than the Punjab government, Captain Amarinder asked Khattar “if that is the case, then why are your own state’s farmers angry with you and your Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)?” Having failed to convince the people of India that it was Punjab and its farmers who were responsible for the prolonged agitation against the Farm Laws at the Delhi borders, Khattar was now resorting to blatant lies and exaggerated claims, Captain Amarinder said, adding that indulging in this petty data crunching will not condone Haryana government’s excesses against the farmers.
Far from ensuring the welfare of farmers, the Khattar government had actively damaged their interests, said the Punjab Chief Minister, countering the former’s claims with a list of pro-farmer initiatives and schemes initiated by his government despite the fiscal mess he inherited from the BJP-SAD government back in 2017.
“Your party left us without money even to pay our employees, and yet, we have successfully waived off Rs. 4624.38 Crores in debt of 564143 Small and Marginal farmers till date, with another Rs. 590 Crore sanctioned for loan waiver of 2.85 lakh landless farmers and labourers,” quipped Captain Amarinder, dismissing Khattar’s nonsensical claims of leading a pro-farmer government.
Ridiculing Khattar’s proud assertion that his government was paying 12% in interest against delay in payment, Captain Amarinder said that in sharp contrast to Haryana, farmers in Punjab were getting their payment directly into their accounts within 72 hours, eliminating the need to pay interest. “It is your government’s shoddy management of the whole procurement process and your typical apathetic attitude towards the farmers which causes the payment delay in the first place,” he quipped in response to Khattar.

Jalandhar: Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Monday appealed the Union External Affairs Minister for immediate evacuation of trapped Indians from Afghanistan, here on Monday.

In a tweet tagging minister, CM Capt wrote, “Urge @DrSJaishankar, MEA, GoI, to arrange for immediate evacuation of all Indians, including around 200 Sikhs, stuck in a Gurudwara in Afghanistan after the #Taliban takeover. My govt is willing to extend any help needed to ensure their safe evacuation. @MEAIndia”

There is mayhem in the country after Taliban have taken control of Afghanistan, almost 20 years after being ousted by a US-led military coalition and locals are attempting to forcibly enter planes leaving the Afghan capital. A video in which people were seen attempting to enter planes forcibly to flee the country has gone viral on the social media. In this chaos, at least five people reported dead.

Meanwhile, India is trying to evacuate hundreds of its officials and citizens from Kabul, officials said.

Amritsar: Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, on the historic 75th Independence Day of the country, on Sunday vowed to protect the border state against the nefarious designs of Pakistan, even as he pledged to continue fighting with the farmers for the repeal of the Centre’s black Farm Laws.

Calling for extreme vigil against Pakistan, which continued to try to foment trouble even 75 years after independence, the Chief Minister asserted that while “we want Punjab, but will not tolerate any aggression or attack on our territory.” Addressing the people of Punjab after unfurling the national flag, the Chief Minister declared “we will teach them (Pakistan) the lesson of their lifetime if they try to be adventurous.”

Pointing to the use of drones by the neighbouring country to smuggle arms and drugs into the state, Captain Amarinder warned that Pakistan would not leave any opportunity to take advantage of any vulnerability in Punjab.

Stressing the need to ensure peace in the state to promote the development of industry and the progress of its people, the Chief Minister said his government would not tolerate any threat, including those from gangsters and terrorists. “We will deal with them squarely,” he pledged, adding that “Any threat to Punjab would be a danger to our entire nation.” He disclosed that since his government took over, 47 Pakistani terrorist modules and 347 modules of gangsters had been neutralized, including some key gangsters who had been deported from Armenia, UAE and other countries, with more awaiting deportation.

Later, interacting informally with some media-persons on the sidelines of the I-day function, the Chief Minister expressed concern about the continuing agitation of the farmers and said he had raised the issue recently during his meetings with the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister. He said he demanded the repeal of the Farm Laws, which were anti-farmer and against the spirit of the Constitution. He made it clear that he would continue to fight with the farmers for the revocation of these legislations, and would not let the sacrifices of those who had lost their lives in this struggle go in vain.

Captain Amarinder Singh said, “The fight against these Black Laws is not political. It does not matter who is in power where. We need to stand by what is right and to ensure that our rights under the Constitution are not crushed. Had some of the other political parties heeded my repeated implorations in June last year to unitedly articulate our deep concerns before the Centre, this situation might not have arisen.”

CM said that the legal efforts made by his government to get the sacrilege cases back from the CBI, to which the previous SAD-BJP government had handed over the 3 FIRs they had registered, along with another 3 in the Kotkapura and Behbal Kalan firing cases. Since taking over the cases from the CBI, chargesheets have been filed in four cases against 23 persons and 15 police personnel have been suspended while 10 persons have been arrested, he said, adding that 10 challans have been presented so far.

The government was in the process of setting up 5 new medical colleges, besides upgrading the existing ones, he added.

The Chief Minister expressed pride in the performance of the 20 boys and girls who had brought laurels to the state in the recently concluded Tokyo Olympic Games and said besides the cash rewards, government jobs would be given to all of them. He, however, personally felt all this was not enough to appreciate their achievements, he added.

On the welfare of servicemen, he disclosed that 82 next-of-kin of Martyrs have been given jobs in the state government, with another 15 set to be given jobs soon. This is in addition to the increase in ex-gratia to the families from Rs 12 lakh to Rs. 50 lakh, he said, adding that 4300 Guardians of Governance are working across the state to ensure that the benefits of schemes reach the citizens.

“Our policies have been greatly appreciated by the people in the urban areas, which is reflected in the huge mandate given to the Congress party in the Municipal elections,” he noted, thanking the people for the same.

Terming himself to be blessed to be part of the historic occasions of the 550th Prakash Purb of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji and the 400th Prakash Purab of Ninth Sikh Guru Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, the Chief Minister said once the Covid situation improves, the latter will be celebrated as warranted by the occasion. The 350th Birth Anniversary of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Ji also could not be celebrated due to Covid but the state government will shortly install a statue of the legendary Sikh General in Sirhind, he said. Terming the closing of Kartarpur Corridor as a big casualty of the Covid, the Chief Minister again requested the Government of India to take up the matter for its early opening so that the Sikh Sangat can have Khulle Darshan Didar.

Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court, while hearing the income tax department’s plea, asked a Ludhiana trial court not to proceed further in income tax cases against Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh and his son Raninder Singh.

The High Court hearing the plea said that the trial court is restrained from passing the final order, pending the listing of three petitions on the issue before the bench.

The High court bench was told by the IT department that the trial court is going to pass the final order because of a revisional court quashing the summoning order against the two.

Observing the case bench of Justice GS Sandhawalia said, “CJM should not pass any further orders on the complaint.” The judge posted the matter for November 18 and also asked that both be served the notices for an adjourned date.

Captain Amarinder and his son are facing allegations of furnishing false statements and willful omission in providing required information to the I-T department that had filed criminal complaints against them in a Ludhiana court in 2016.

Jalandhar: Denying its involvement in the recent recovery of RDX explosive, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, belonging to the pro-Khalistan Sikh for Justice (SFJ) outfit, has said that they do not plant bombs but have trained ‘Sikhs as weapons’ to counter nefarious governments in the elections.

“Deliver this message to Punjab DGP Dinkar Gupta and Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh that under the Khalistan referendum campaign, we have made ‘Sikhs as a weapon’ in Punjab who do not plant explosives but are equipped with meticulous knowledge of law and order to annihilate dastardly governments by votes in elections,” a recorded message in Punjabi said.

The calls have been made to Punjabis from a foreign number and the caller identified himself as Gurpatwant Singh Pannun of SFJ after the Punjab police found a Tiffin Box fabricated into an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) or Tiffin Bomb along with five hand grenades and 100 rounds of 9mm pistol recovered from village Daleke, Lopoke in Amritsar. DGP Gupta suspected foreign hands in the terror act.

Earlier, this SFJ outfit, through similar calls, had threatened Punjab CM Amarinder and Governor VP Singh Badnore, to perish them if they the Indian tricolour the occasion of Independence Day on August 15th, Pannun was reportedly heard saying in an audio clip adding that at a time farmers are dying, the hoisting of tricolour shall not be tolerated.
