Pune: A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker built a temple of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Pune. The temple, however, was closed after heavy criticism from the Congress and other opposition leaders, here on Thursday.

Mayur Munde, a real estate agent and BJP worker inaugurated the temple on Independence Day, which had a statue of the Prime Minister and featured the BJP;s lotus symbol.

He claimed that he spent around Rs 1.6 lakh on the temple which also featured hoarding of a poem praising Modi.

Speaking to local media, he said that he was inspired by Modi’s work and he should have his own shrine as he built the Ram temple in Ayodhya.

However, he faced fierce opprobrium from opposition party leaders and Congress spokesperson Anant Gadgil said that Munde’s temple the “height on fanaticism”.

Nationalist Congress Party leader Prashant Jagtap said that workers should admire his leaders but this type of initiatives of building temples of a living individual leader will give a wrong message to society.

Meanwhile, people on social media also mocked the efforts of Munde and many called him ‘andh-Modi Bhagat’ (blind follower of Modi).

Srinagar: Calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ideology “divides India”, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said he and his party would continue to fight it as BJP is suppressing opposition’s voice and they are not being allowed to raise important issues like farm bills, snooping, unemployment and corruption, in Parliament.
Addressing a public rally in Kashmir on Tuesday said, “BJP has not only launched an assault on Jammu and Kashmir but on the entire country including on the judiciary. There is a direct attack on Kashmir’s people but other states like West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and other states are being attacked indirectly,” Gandhi said.
Gandhi said that he demands restoration of full statehood for Jammu & Kashmir and free and fair elections here. This was Gandhi’s first visit to the Union Territory since the abrogation of Article 370.
Dubbing his visit as a “homecoming”, he said, “I understood the people of Kashmir. Our family lives in Delhi now but before that, we used to live in Allahabad and I feel, there is a bit of Kashmiriyat is also within me.”
“We want to raise these issues but we are not allowed to speak in Parliament on issues like farm bills, Pegasus, corruption, Rafale deal and unemployment,” he said during his speech.
“I fight against Modi and his ideology that is dividing the nation. I will continue to fight against his divisive ideology,” Gandhi added.
He further said that they (media) now have a fear that their job is at stake when they do their job.

New Delhi: Launching a fierce attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Tuesday questioned PM’s silence on the allegations of snooping by government agencies using Pegasus software in India.
“If the defence ministry did not have any transaction with the NSO Group, which is at the centre of the Pegasus controversy, then only PM Modi could answer on behalf of all ministers and departments over the issue,” Chidambaram said.
NSO Group, an Israeli surveillance software company, has been under increasing attack following allegations that its Pegasus software was used for surveillance of phones of people in several countries, including India to spy on journalists, politicians and judges.
Replying to a question in parliament, minister of State for Defence Ajay Bhatt said that the defence ministry has not had any transaction with NSO Group Technologies.
The reaction has sparked a political row in the country as opposition leaders are blaming Modi-led BJP government for spying on them.
Chidambaram on his official Twitter account wrote, “MoD has ‘absolved’ itself of any deal with the NSO Group, Israel Assuming, MoD is correct, that takes out one Ministry/Department. What about the remaining half a dozen usual suspects? Only the PM can answer on behalf of ALL ministries/departments. Why is he silent?”
Earlier, it has come to fore that over 300 verified Indian mobile phone numbers, including that of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Union ministers Prahlad Singh Patel and at least 40 journalists, were on the list of potential targets for surveillance using Israeli firm NSO Group’s Pegasus spyware.
The Union government, however, refuted the opposition’s allegations in this matter.

New Delhi: Senior leaders of 15 opposition parties on Monday held a joint meeting at the Parliament complex to formulate a common strategy on issues like the Pegasus snooping controversy and farmers’ concerns as the Monsoon session of Parliament entered its final week.
Besides the Congress leaders including Rahul Gandhi, leaders of the DMK, TMC, NCP, Shiv Sena, SP, CPM, RJD, AAP, CPI, NC, IUML, LJD, RSP and the KC(M) were present in the meeting held at the chamber of Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge.
The is seen as a crucial meeting to counter the BJP-led government on various issues including the pressuring Union government for a discussion on the Pegasus snooping issue and the farmers’ problems, who have been agitating against Centre’s contentious three-farm bills.
Parliament has failed to transact any significant business since it met on July 19 for the Monsoon session. Some bills, however, have been passed amid the ruckus by the opposition. On Monday, however, opposition decided to cooperate with the union government to clear a constitutional amendment bill.
Opposition leaders told the media that they have decided to cooperate for the passage of the127th Constitution Amendment Bill 2021 but their protest will continue on other issues against the nefarious BJP-led union government.
The Constitution Amendment bill aims to bypass a May 2021 Supreme Court ruling that said only the Centre could notify socially and educationally backward classes (SEBCs) — and not the states.

NEW DELHI (Reuters) – Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the opening on Friday of a giant music and dance festival that has been criticised for environmental damage and the possible safety risks of its enormous stage.

Large crowds braved heavy rain for the start of the event, crossing army-made pontoon bridges across Delhi’s main river, the Yamuna, to the “World Culture Festival”, where 35,000 dancers and musicians will perform to an expected audience of millions over three days.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addresses the gathering at the venue of World Culture Festival on the banks of the river in New Delhi, India, March 11, 2016. REUTERS/Adnan Abidi

Modi, the star guest at the opening ceremony, sat next to organiser Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, a well known guru, on a specially built VIP stand, as hundreds of holy men chanted in harmony and women dressed in red and gold danced to drum beats on the stage below.

The festival has pitted Ravi Shankar against environmentalists, concerned about damage to the nature-rich floodplain, and the Delhi police, who said the 7-acre (3-hectare) stage – which organisers say is the world’s largest – lacked a safety certificate.

India’s top environmental court this week fined Ravi Shankar’s organisation 50 million rupees ($750,000) and questioned why authorities had allowed the festival to be held in such an environmentally sensitive area, but it did not stop the event going ahead.

Green groups say the event will destroy the biodiversity of the 1,000-acre (400-hectare) site by ripping up vegetation, flattening land and altering the river’s flow.

Ravi Shankar has rejected criticism and promised to leave the area better than he found it.

Delhi police expressed concern about whether organisers were equipped to manage such a large number of people, warning of the potential for “utter chaos”.

The Yamuna, a tributary of the Ganges and the source for much of Delhi’s water, is revered by many Hindus who bathe in it, despite high levels of industrial and human waste. ($1 = 67.0145 rupees)
