Jalandhar: A joint teams of police and army officials on the eve of Independence Day conducted intensive checking at all prominent places to ensure foolproof security cover in the city.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Subash Arora said that in the wake of Independence Day event on August 15, Commissionerate Police with collaboration with army officials have checked all prominent points in the city. Anti sabotage teams of both sides conducted checking at Railway Station, Bus Stand, Guru Gobind Singh Stadium, Circuit House, Rainik Bazaar, Shri Devi Talab Mandir, and other places. He stated that the army teams were led by Lieutenant GS Pasricha.

During the checking in public places, the officials also sensitized people and shopkeepers to remain vigil of any kind of suspicious activities and inform police immediately, if they found anything unusual. The teams also urged people to stay away from unclaimed articles and share such information with the police department so that such items could be screened at the earliest.

A total of 126 youths took part in the job fair out of which 73 got placements.

Deputy Commissioner Ghanshyam Thori said that seven companies including Future Generalli, Agile Future, Narayni Herbals, Brilliant Insurance Pvt Ltd, Kotake Life Insurance, NIIT, and ShriRam Insurance participated in the fair.

Thori said the Ghar-Ghar Rozgar program was all set to transform the destiny of the youth of the state by providing job opportunities to them.

“The selection of the youth for jobs was being done purely on merit through a fair and transparent system,” he said.

The move came after a civil writ petition filed by Puran Singh of Nurmahal, creation of a ‘fake gram’ panchayat allegedly by the Divya Jyoti Jagriti Sansthan(DJJS) in Nurmahal.

Singh, claiming to be the former driver of DJJS head Ashutosh Maharaj (clinically dead but claimed to be in Samadhi), sought the information through RTI information, a copy of which with), revealed that Jalandhar village Divya Gram reportedly does not exist in revenue records but was getting grants for developmental works.

Following this, he had filed a civil writ petition which was listed before the bench of Justice Anil Kshetarpal.

He submitted in the court that a fake gram panchayat, village Diviya Gram, has been created in order to siphon off funds granted by the 14th Finance Commission as also the Local Area Development Fund and Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA). The rural development and panchayat also receive grants from the board.

Advocate Baltej Singh Sidhu said, “The department constituted a gram Sabha for a non-existing village and took development grants. A legal notice was also sent to the state for conducting a probe but no action was taken,” he told the court.

He said that the court directed the state government to conclude the inquiry into the entire matter and placed it on record on adjourned date of September 7 the court.

The village reportedly received grants worth Rs 2.59 lakhs under MNREGA and the number of houses in the village listed is 59 but the government’s revenue department does not have any records of it which is illegal as per the law, the advocate said.

When contacted, Block development and panchayat officer (BDPO) Pawanpreet Kaur said, “A department inquiry is going on into the matter and a reply will be submitted in the matter before the high court.”

Jalandhar: Following the recovery of a suspicious abandoned bag at the railway station in Jalandhar, a massive search operation has been launched by the authorities here on Thursday.

The police have also sealed the railway station and the bomb squad team has been called on the spot to inspect the bag.

The deceased has been identified as Rohit Kumar of Khateek Mohalla in Nurmahal.

Following information of the crime, district police led by Jalandhar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Naveen Singla rushed to the spot.

According to the information, barged into the victim’s house on Tuesday morning and later opened two fires on him, which led to his death on the spot, police said.

Police said that investigation is underway but a preliminary investigation indicates that it might be a case of personal enmity.

A case has been registered \\under Section 302 (murder) and efforts are on to apprehend the accused.
