Former Jalandhar Cantonment MLA Jagbir Brar quits Congress, joins SAD

Jalandhar: After quitting Congress, former Jalandhar Cantonment MLA Jagbir Brar has again joined Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) here on Monday.
The SAD president visited the former Punjab Water Resources Management and Development Corporation Chairman’s house in the Model Town locality.
Brar won the seat of Jalandhar Cantt Assembly Constituency in 2007 as SAD MLA. He wass also the former President of DCC Jalandhar. Brar had served as a Block development panchayat officer before joining politics. Brar was appointed as Chairman of Punjab Water Resources Management and Development Corporation in 2019 by the Punjab Government.
He joined the People’s Party of Punjab in 2011 and quit the party in 2012 after losing elections to Pargat Singh, who was then the SAD candidate. He was coerced to move to unsuccessfully contest the Nakodar seat after Pargat Singh got the Congress on ticket Jalandhar Cantt seat.
Brar was expectant of returning to Cantt seat again after Pargat’s recent outbursts against Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, however, things didn’t turn out the way he had hoped and hence he chose to rejoin the Akali Dal to contest from the Cantonment seat, said a close aide of Brar.
Meanwhile, the re-joining of Brar in SAD has also upset former MLA and senior Akali Dal Sarabjeet Singh Makkar, who had contested from the seat in 2017.

Arvind Kejriwal is a ‘Khalistani’ says Balwant Rajoana

Jalandhar: Terming Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convener Arvind Kejriwal as a ‘Khalistani’, Balwant Singh Rajoana, convicted for the assassination of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh, said that AAP is a front of ‘Khalistani supporters’ in Punjab to weaken the ‘Panth’.
Rajoana’s sister Kamaldeep Kaur Rajoana reportedly posted his message on her Facebook on Saturday.
In the post, Rajoana said that he has been lodged in different jails for the past 23 years but none of the ‘Khalistani’ supporters has ever visited the jail to meet him or did anything to bolster the Sikh religion in Punjab or across the world.
“I have been facing a death penalty for over a decade now and in this period, I have realized that the ‘Khalistani moment’ is just an eyewash to gain political mileage. And some so-called supporters of this moment have also been misguiding the Sikhs for years,” the post read.
The post further read that under ‘Referendum 2020’, they gave advantage to AAP party and its leaders as they got huge funds from them to do treacherous propaganda to misguide Sikhs in 2017 Vidhan Sabha elections while denting the image of Akali Dal party.
Rajoana was employed as a constable in Punjab Police before he was convicted for his involvement in an explosion outside the Punjab Civil Secretariat in 1995. The explosion had killed CM Beant Singh and 16 others.

Culprits in Behbal Kalan will be punished, if AAP forms govt

Jalandhar: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) said that exemplary punishment will be given to the accused of the Behbal Kalan firing incident if the party formed the government in Punjab.
Addressing a press conference here, AAP legal cell state president Justice Zora Singh (retd) said that if the party forms the government in the upcoming assembly polls, the AAP party will also make public the report of Justice Zora Singh Commission, probing the case.
Zora Singh had headed a commission to probe sacrilege incidents in Punjab during SAD-BJP Government and later joined the AAP party before the Lok Sabha polls.
“The SITs constituted by the SAD and the Congress to probe the Behbal Kalan incident were mere eyewash and they have been doing politics over the matter. But we will give deserving punishment to culprits in sacrilege incidents,” he said, adding that all previous probe committees proved to be hollow as the victims never got deserved justice.
He said the Zora Singh Commission Report was against the SAD that is why the Akali government did not allow the report to be made public and now the Congress government was doing the same.
“Terrorism in the state was a crisis created by political leadership ahead of the polls and anti-people policies of successive governments have been pushing the youth towards drugs. We will promote the Delhi model in Punjab and all residents will be provided with the basic facilities,” he added.

NCPCR summons Facebook official over Rahul Gandhi’s Instagram post

New Delhi: The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has issued a summons to Facebook India officials seeking details of the action taken against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for violating norms.
NCPCR asked India’s trust and safety head Satya Yadav to appear before it at 5pm on August 17 virtually and furnish information that what action has been taken against Gandhi for posting a video on his Instagram account revealing the identity of the family of the nine-year-old girl allegedly raped and murdered in southwest Delhi.
On Friday, the child rights body directed Facebook to take action against Gandhi in the matter citing that he violated the provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act, 2012, and the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The body also sought removal of the video from the platform.
Earlier, NCPCR had also written to Twitter and asked it to take action against Gandhi for posting the family’s photo on twitter, following which, his account had been suspended along with many other Congress leaders for sharing the same tweet.
The party’s official handle was also barred from posting and Congress called it an attack on democracy and blamed twitter for acting under BJP government’s pressure.

Twitter unlocks Rahul Gandhi’s handle

New Delhi: A week after suspending Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s account for disclosing a minor rape victim’s identity, Twitter India on Saturday has unlocked his account.

Gandhi had tweeted pictures of the family of a nine-year-old victim of alleged rape and murder in northwest Delhi while castigating the BJP-led union government.
Later, Twitter also suspended the accounts of many other leaders for sharing the same tweet citing that it violated its policies.
A party leader said that Gandhi’s and some of the party leaders’ accounts have been unlocked by twitter. On Thursday, Gandhi attacked twitter for suspending Congress party’s official handle alleging that it is running under the union government’s pressure.

Congress leaders allege nepotism in vaccination camps, stage protest in Phagwara

Phagwara: Miffed over alleged nepotism in organizing vaccination camp for facilitating people to combat Covid 19 pandemic, former Punjab Minister and Chairman of Punjab Agro Industries Corporation Joginder Singh Mann today staged protest at the local Civil Hospital Smo’s office.

Mann, accompanied by several Congress workers, said that at this crucial juncture when the Punjab government led by Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has launched a full scale war against the pandemic by ensuring free vaccination to all. However, he said that the local MLA and his coterie is playing cheap and dirty politics during the drive too by stalling the vaccination camps in Phagwara.

He said that instead of ensuring that vaccination reaches to all the people, the MLA is stooping too low by interfering in the smooth execution of the camps by the health department.

He said that Health department too is acting a puppet in the hands of the MLA and is indulging in nepotism thereby putting the life of the common people of Phagwara in peril. He said that it will not be tolerated as the interest of people is of paramount importance and the camps will be organized only at the places where it is required the most instead of whims and fancies of the MLA.

He said that in a democratic set up everyone has right over the facilities of government and it cannot be limited only to chosen ones.

Mann, a three time former MLA from Phagwara, bemoaned that in his entire political career he has not seen democracy stopping too low.

He said that interests of Phagwara residents have been of paramount significance for him and no one will be allowed to play havoc with them. He said that he has been serving the residents Of Phagwara since 1985 and will fight for every wrong thing which aims at harming the interests of Phagwara residents.

5 suspended food supply officials finally booked for siphoning off 24k quintals wheat in Sultanpur Lodhi

Sultanpur Lodhi: Kapurthala police have registered a case against five food and civil supply department officials, including four inspectors, for allegedly siphoning off 24,000 quintals of wheat meant for Atta Dal scheme beneficiaries in Sultanpur Lodhi.
The move came after Kapurthala district food supply controller Geeta Bishambhu on July 26 had written to Kapurthala SSP Harkamalpreet Singh Khakh, seeking legal action against two of the five accused, Vivek Gupta and Bhupinder Singh, after a department inquiry nailed them for siphoning off wheat.
A case under Sections 409, and 120B of the IPC and 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act against Vivek Sharma, Bhupinder Singh, Vikas Sethi, Rameshwar Singh, all food supply inspectors, and Munish Bassi, assistant food supply inspector.
The accused were posted at Sultanpur Lodhi between October 2020 and May 2021 and had been suspended by Food and civil supplies minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu after a probe on the complaint filed by local Congress MLA Navtej Singh Cheema in June this year, officials said.
Sultanpur Lodhi DSP Sarwan Singh Bal said the accused were booked on the basis of a departmental inquiry report and further investigation is underway.
Later, in the inquiry, it had come to fore that the department’s Sultanpur Lodhi centre didn’t provide records of wheat distribution to the inspection teams despite repeated orders, holding them guilty of grave negligence.

Opposition leaders meet to formulate strategy on Pegasus, farm issues

New Delhi: To evolve a joint strategy on the Pegasus snooping row and other issues, Opposition leaders from various parties, including the Congress again met on Wednesday.

As many as 14 parties were represented took part in this meeting held in the chamber of leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge.

Earlier, 15 opposition parties including Congress leaders DMK, TMC, NCP, Shiv Sena, SP, CPM, RJD, AAP, CPI, NC, IUML, LJD, RSP and the KC(M) were present in the meeting on Monday.

Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi also attended the discussions while other leaders were present at the meeting also included the Samajwadi Party, Shiv Sena, National Conference, NCP, CPM, RJD, CPI, IUML, RSP, VCK and the LJD.

Besides, Punjab MPs from the Congress and the SAD staged a protest in Parliament complex in support of farmers seeking a repeal of the new agri laws.

The is seen as a crucial meeting to counter the BJP-led government on various issues including the pressuring Union government for a discussion on the Pegasus snooping issue and the farmers’ problems, who have been agitating against Centre’s contentious three-farm bills.
Parliament has failed to transact any significant business since it met on July 19 for the Monsoon session. Some bills, however, have been passed amid the ruckus by the opposition. However, opposition decided to cooperate with the union government to clear a constitutional amendment bill.

Sant Seechewal urges Punjab political parties to make Environment a poll issue

Jalandhar: Padma Shri and environmentalist Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal on Monday asked the politicians to make the “Environment and Water preservation” an important election issue in the upcoming state assembly elections.
He also asked the ruling Congress government to prepare a strategy to protect water resources and reforming the water supply industry at once.
Environmentalist Seechewal said due to rising pollution in the Beas, it had killed a gigantic number of fishes and other aquatic animals in the past several years but no initiative has been taken up by successive governments in this regard so far.
“Their sacrifice should not go unnoticed and for that, Congress government and opposition parties should announce that they will include the environment in their manifesto this time,” said Seechewal.
“Parties are announcing free electricity, food and other freebies but no one is talking about the real issues of Punjab including the exponential rise in water pollution. No politician is even ready to consider the depleting water as a genuine election issue. This is the high time to preserve the environment,” he said, adding that who will be responsible for this disaster as the dirty and poisonous waters flowing in all the rivers and drains of Punjab.
He also said it is also a violation of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act 1974, but no concrete action was being taken against anyone by the government.
He said that the poisonous water from factories in Ludhiana is constantly being released in the Sutlej and many people in the nearby villages die due to the polluted water. It is a major reason behind the deadly diseases like cancer and black jaundice in the Malwa region. But, it seems that the government is unmoved, thereby not acting upon the matter seriously.
“I appeal to people of Punjab to support the candidate of parties, which assures to make the environment an important issue of his campaign and will clean the polluted water passing through their concerned constituency,” environmentalist said.
