Jalandhar: Former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) minister Anil Joshi, who was expelled from the party for supporting farmers, along with other saffron party leaders is going to join the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in Chandigarh on August 20.

SAD party president Sukhbir Singh Badal would join Joshi in the party along with Former Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha state chief Mohit Gupta, who hails from Bathinda, a former ex-MLA from Hoshiarpur district, a former Ludhiana deputy mayor and a party leader who contested the previous assembly polls from Ludhiana district are among others likely to switch over to SAD, a senior Akali familiar with the development said.

“We found only SAD can serve the interests of all Punjabis and we have already worked with them closely,” said Joshi, confirming his joining schedule.

The BJP in July had expelled Joshi for six years after he opprobrium state and the central leadership for mishandling the farm agitation.

Interestingly, Joshi’s relationship with the SAD was not so cordial when he was local bodies minister during the Parkash Singh Badal-led previous government in Punjab as he had compared then SAD-led government’s rule with Aurangzeb’s rule after his brother was attacked allegedly by Akali workers in Tarn Taran in 2015.

New Delhi: To evolve a joint strategy on the Pegasus snooping row and other issues, Opposition leaders from various parties, including the Congress again met on Wednesday.

As many as 14 parties were represented took part in this meeting held in the chamber of leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge.

Earlier, 15 opposition parties including Congress leaders DMK, TMC, NCP, Shiv Sena, SP, CPM, RJD, AAP, CPI, NC, IUML, LJD, RSP and the KC(M) were present in the meeting on Monday.

Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi also attended the discussions while other leaders were present at the meeting also included the Samajwadi Party, Shiv Sena, National Conference, NCP, CPM, RJD, CPI, IUML, RSP, VCK and the LJD.

Besides, Punjab MPs from the Congress and the SAD staged a protest in Parliament complex in support of farmers seeking a repeal of the new agri laws.

The is seen as a crucial meeting to counter the BJP-led government on various issues including the pressuring Union government for a discussion on the Pegasus snooping issue and the farmers’ problems, who have been agitating against Centre’s contentious three-farm bills.
Parliament has failed to transact any significant business since it met on July 19 for the Monsoon session. Some bills, however, have been passed amid the ruckus by the opposition. However, opposition decided to cooperate with the union government to clear a constitutional amendment bill.

New Delhi: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday blamed union home minister Amit Shah for an attack on youth Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders from the state.
She alleged that they were attacked and arrested in Tripura during the weekend on instructions from Shah.
“Tripura chief minister Biplab Deb does not have so much courage. I strongly believe that he followed the directions of Amit Shah and the union home ministry,” Banerjee said while talking to media during her visit to youth TMC leaders Jaya Dutta and Sudip Raha at the state-run SSKM Hospital in Kolkata in the morning.
“Life of my nephew and TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, who rushed to Tripura on Sunday, is also in danger. “Abhishek’s car was attacked last week,” she said while referring to the August 2 incident.
“TMC youth leaders who were touring Tripura as part of the party’s plans to prepare for assembly polls in 2023, has posed a serious challenge to the BJP, this is why BJP goons attacked us now,” she said adding that shots were fired and a TMC office was vandalised in Dharmanagar, the biggest Tripura town after Agartala.
On Sunday, the three leaders, along with 11 others, were arrested for violating pandemic restrictions by travelling after 7pm when the state begins its 10-hour curfew every day. They were also charged under non-bailable sections of the Indian Penal Code. Abhishek Banerjee rushed to Tripura along with Bengal minister Bratya Basu, Rajya Sabha member Dola Sen and TMC state general secretary Kunal Ghosh.
However, when the arrested leaders were produced in court by authorities, the judge dropped the criminal charges and granted bail to all 14. Banerjee returned to Kolkata with Bhattacharya, Raha and Dutta on Sunday night.
