New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was recently sentenced by a Surat court in a defamation case. According to sources, Rahul is ready to file a petition challenging this decision.
According to sources, the Congress leader will challenge the sentence in surat sessions court tomorrow. Rahul Gandhi will also go to Surat court tomorrow to file an appeal. The former Congress president, in his plea, has sought the sessions court to set aside the magistrate’s order convicting him in the defamation case.
He also sought an interim stay on the conviction till the case is disposed of.
Rahul Gandhi was granted bail and his sentence was suspended for 30 days for appealing against the verdict, but he was immediately suspended by the Lok Sabha Secretariat.
Opposition leaders questioned the action taken on them at the speed of the “bullet train”. The Election Commission will announce a special election for the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat until rahul Gandhi’s conviction is stayed by the High Court. He will also not be allowed to contest elections for the next eight years.
BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi had filed a defamation case against Rahul Gandhi for saying “how do all thieves have the same surname Modi?” PM Modi was targeted for his last name, during which he also mentioned fugitive businessmen Nirav Modi and Lalit Modi.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s lawyer has argued that the court proceedings were “flawed” from the beginning and also said that MLA Purnesh Modi should not have been the complainant in the case as the PM was the main target of Rahul Gandhi’s speech. Days after his disqualification, Rahul Gandhi was served a notice to vacate his official Delhi bungalow, as he was no longer entitled to it.
