New Delhi: NDA candidate Jagdeep Dhankhar has won the vice-presidential election with a huge margin on Saturday.
He defeated the opposition candidate Congress leader Margaret Alva. The new Vice President will take oath of office on August 11.
Former West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar arrives at Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi’s 11 Akbar Road residence ahead of the announcement of the results of the vice presidential election.
After the counting of votes ended, Lok Sabha Secretary General Utpal Kumar Singh said NDA candidate Jagdeep Dhankhar won by 346 votes out of 528 pulled votes while 15 votes were declared invalid.
In the vice-presidential election, 34 TMC, 2 BJP, 2 Shiv Sena and one BSP MP did not cast their votes.
The voting for the election of the new Vice President began at 10 am today and concluded at 5 pm. The counting of votes began at 6 pm.
Meanwhile, the country’s next Vice President will take oath of office on August 11, a day after the term of incumbent Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu ends.
