Melbourne: Amar Singh, 41, an Indian-origin Sikh volunteer who faced racial slurs for wearing a turban and sporting a beard in Australia, has been honoured with the 2023 New South Wales Australian of the Year Award for his help to the community during natural disasters and the global pandemic.
The Government of New South Wales has given him this award in the category of ‘Local Hero’. Amar Singh, an Indian-origin Sikh, founded ‘Turbans 4 Australia’ seven years ago. This organization helps people affected by natural calamities, displaced and suffering.
According to a statement issued by the New South Wales government, Amar Singh, who advocates for a diverse culture and social unity, faced racial slurs for wearing a turban and keeping a beard.
“Amar Singh, 41, believes that religion, language or cultural background should not come in the way of helping others.”
