Chandigarh: The high court directed the Punjab and central governments to file a reply on the number of tainted police officers and action taken against them.
The move came after, Surjit Singh, a constable of the Punjab Police, had filed the petition stating that an FIR has been registered against him in a criminal case. After the registration, the then Moga SSP had ordered his dismissal.
On November 23, 2018, the Ferozepur range IG had asked for his reinstatement. Despite this, he was dismissed from service.
Earlier, Punjab Deputy Home Secretary Vijay Kumar had filed an affidavit in the high court stating that 822 police personnel were tainted in the Punjab Police. These include 18 inspectors, 24 SIs, 170 ASIs and the rest head constables and constables.
To this, the petitioner had said that these are only officers at the lower level and information pertaining to PPS and IPS have not been furnished yet. The high court had sought information from the Punjab government in this regard.
The petition was pending, the Punjab government challenged the order before the bench. The bench said that in this case, the government has already submitted the report by following most of the orders. It is also necessary to hear the issues raised by the single bench.
