We remain firm in our commitment to resettle 40,000 Afghan nationals, and our partnerships with provinces, territories and settlement service providers across the country are key to achieving this goal.

Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced that over 200 Afghan refugees landed in Vancouver last night. This marks the largest flight to date of Afghan nationals arriving in BC. Approximately 161 of them will start their new lives in Vancouver, while the other 48 will settle elsewhere in the country, where they have family ties. This brings the total number of Afghan refugees who have arrived in Canada to over 7,000.

NeW ORLEANS: With the Hurricane Ida slammed Louisiana on Monday, one person has died and over a million people were left without power as one of the most powerful storms ever to hit the US.

The hurricane has caused devastation across Louisiana, which made landfall late on Sunday morning at Port Fourchon, exactly 16 years since Hurricane Katrina, the catastrophic hurricane had killed over 1,800 on the Gulf coast in 2005.

According to authorities, this catastrophic hurricane has hit Louisiana as a Category 4 storm with 150 mile-per-hour winds, and torrential downpours.

President Joe Biden has declared the event a major disaster and ordered federal aid to help recovery efforts.

Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards said Ida could be the state’s worst direct hit by a hurricane since the 1850s and promised a swift action to rescue people.

Desperate for rescue, locals posted their addresses and locations, directing rescue teams to their attics or rooftops.

Officials assured to intensify the rescue operation as the weather broke and the sun rose.

The torrential rains mostly moved into Mississippi on Monday as the storm slowly moved north.

Officials have predicted that Ida is likely to move over central and northeastern Mississippi, and move across the Tennessee Valley on Tuesday.

Chandigarh: The Chairman, Sugarfed Amrik Singh Aliwal on Wednesday said that the cooperative sugar mills of Punjab would give due payments to the cane growers by the first week of September.

The statement came a day after the farmers announced to block highways, railway tracks from August 20 across the state against Punjab government for their pending dues.

Aliwal said that a provision of Rs 300 crore has been made in the budget of 2021-22 by the State Government for complete payment.

The nine cooperative sugar mills in the State have already released a sum of Rs. 486.24 crore for the year 2019-20 while during the year 2020-21, a sum of Rs. 417.33 crore out of Rs. 472.10 crore has been paid. The Finance Department has sanctioned the release of Rs. 54 crore out of the balance Rs. 54.77 crore which would be paid by the first week of September to the cane growers, he said.

Aliwal said that owing to the Union Government still withholding the export subsidy and buffer stock subsidy to the tune of Rs. 9.77 crore of the cooperative sugar mills pertaining to the year 2019-20. This explains why the concerned department is being approached and the amount is hoped to be released soon.

“The balance amount of Rs. 9.77 crore will also be credited directly into the accounts of the cane growers after the release. He also said that it would be the first time in the past many years that the due payment of the previous crushing season would be made by the first week of September,” he said.

Gurdaspur: In yet another instance of a dilapidated situation of employment in Punjab, an eight-month-old pregnant widow is forced to sell food at a stall in Gurdaspur.

Rajni’s husband and sole breadwinner of the house died around two months back. She is now looking after her 8-year-old daughter and in-laws.

She is a Master of Computer Applications (MCA) degree holder, however, unable to get any job, she decided to run her food business but due to paucity of funds, she chooses to sell ‘Rajma Chawal’ on a stall.

“After my husband’s death, there is no one to feed our family as my elderly father-in-law is also unable to work due to health issues. Following this, I decided to work to earn some money despite being pregnant,” said Rajni.

She appealed to local NGOs and social workers to extend a helping hand to her family in this grieving time.
