Kapurthala: In yet another instance of exposing lax security in the prison, Kapurthala modern jail authorities have recovered drugs from the jail premises.
Jail officials during a surprise checking have seized 5gm of intoxicated powder buried in soil by unidentified inmates inside the jail premises.
Assistant jail superintendent Sucha Singh said that during a route checking, a police team recovered drugs from the jail and a departmental investigation is on to ascertain how the drugs were smuggled into the jail.
A case has been registered into the matter by the Kotwali police under relevant Sections of NDPS against unidentified prisoners.
This is not the first case of drug nexus running from the case.
Jail authorities had recovered mobile phones and 4.75gm intoxicant white powder and 4gm grown powder from their possession last month from two inmates.
An ASI was caught smuggling 50g charas into the jail. In the 13 cases where drugs were recovered from Kapurthala jail last year, the involvement of jail officials was established in five.
Beside this, this year, jail authorities had seized around 90 mobile phones and over 50 mobile sim cards from prisoners, a jail official said.
As per Kotwali police station records around 170 mobile phones were seized in 2018 and over 200 mobile batteries, Sim cards and chargers were recovered from prisoners in 2019 while over 150 mobile phones along with Sim cards had been recovered from jail last year during surprise inspections.
Early this month, Kapurthala police busted a gang of smugglers being run from the Kapurtahla jail.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Harkamalpreet Singh Khakh had said that two accused revealed that Jasmeet Singh alias lucky resident of Sham Churasi Hoshiarpur, who were lodged in Kapurthala Jail, supplies the Narcotics through his associates outside jail.
