Absconding smuggler arrested with 1kg heroin after encounter at Amritsar

Chandigarh: A absconding smuggler has been arrested with one kg heroin after a brief encounter by the Punjab Police on Monday.

According to the information, smuggler’s car overturned while trying to escape. After which the smuggler has been caught by the police. Police have recovered heroin worth Rs 7 crore and illegal weapons from his possession.

The action took place in Dabbar village under Ajnala in Amritsar. The arrested accused has been identified as Sonu Masih, a resident of Khanwal.

The accused is the son of a sitting sarpanch. The smuggler had been serving a jail term in the NDPS case for some time. He came out of jail on parole some time ago. He did not go back to jail after his parole ended. On basis of inputs, STF laid a trap and followed the accused.

On seeing the police, Sonu was trying to escape. When STF vehicles followed him, he opened fire. After which the police also started firing on the accused.

Meanwhile, he lost balance from the car and it overturned in the fields.

Police have taken the accused Sonu into custody. About 1 kg of heroin was recovered from the car of the accused. Apart from this, the accused’s illegal pistol has also been recovered, from which he was firing at the police.
